Solitary tumours of peripheral nerve trunks.

چکیده

Primary solitary tumours of the peripheral nerve trunks are relatively infrequent. Three such tumours have been treated at Hammersmith Hospital during the last four years, but a search of the hospital records for the period 1939-1950 has not shown any similar cases. (Solitary tumours of the auditory nerve and spinal nerve roots are not included in this report.) In these three patients the tumour involved the radial, lateral popliteal and ulnar nerves respectively. In only one of them was the diagnosis made before operation. A swelling arising from a main nerve trunk may be a traumatic false neuroma, a neurofibroma, a neurilemmoma or, more seldom, a neurofibrosarcoma. There are only two benign tumours which arise from nerve trunks. One of these is the neurilemmoma, which develops from the cells of Schwann, and with which this paper is mainly concerned; the other is the neurofibroma, which is derived from fibroblasts and will be discussed only in relation to the true neurilemmoma. Nerve axons cannot give rise to tumours independently of their parent cells, but if damaged or divided they coil up into a mass of connective tissue and give rise to a false neuroma. Peripheral tumours of nerve cells can occur only in situations where there are nerve ganglia, as in the sympathetic plexuses or the thoracic root ganglia. They are included in the group of ganglion-neuromas, comprising less than one per cent of nerve tumours outside the central nervous system, and will not be discussed here.

Solitary breast neurofibroma: imaging aspects

Neurofibromas are benign peripheral nerve sheath tumours, which are usually solitary and sporadic. Solitary neurofibromas of the breast are rare. The most common location of a breast neurofibroma is the nipple-areola complex. We report a rare case of a 56-year-old woman with a solitary neurofibroma of the right breast sulcus.

Malignant Peripheral Nerve Sheath Tumour Arising From Solitary Sclerotic Neurofibroma.

Neurofibroma is a benign neoplasm of the peripheral nerve, which occurs as multiple tumours in neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) or as a solitary tumour with no association with NF1. Malignant change is sometimes reported in neurofibroma in NF1, but there are few reports of malignant transformation of solitary neurofibroma. We report here a case of malignant change in a solitary sclerotic neurofib...

Multiple schwannomas of the sciatic nerve.

Schwannomas are rare benign tumours of nerve sheath cells of neural crest origin. Often these tumours are solitary and encapsulated. Multiple schwannomas can arise from the peripheral nervous system including cranial nerves, spinal roots, the brachial and lumbar-sacral plexus or major peripheral nerves. We report an extremely rare case of schwannomatosis of the sciatic nerve in a young female a...

Solitary benign peripheral-nerve tumours. Review of 32 years' experience.

Solitary benign peripheral-nerve tumours are rare and may be difficult to diagnose correctly. Surgical excision may increase the patient's symptoms and may not be necessary. We have reviewed the presentation, clinical findings and histology of 104 solitary tumours presenting at one centre between 1959 and 1990. Male patients predominated for both schwannoma and neurofibroma. There was considera...

Anatomical Variations of Brachial Plexus in Adult Cadavers; A Descriptive Study

Background: Variations of the brachial plexus are common and a better awareness of the variations is of crucial importance to achieve successful results in its surgical procedures.
